A BRIEF HISTORY ABOUT CONDOMS

Condoms have a long history dating back to ancient civilizations in Egypt and parts of Europe. Artistic impressions show images of ancient Egyptians wearing linen sheathes, around 100 BC. It is still not clear whether the linen sheathes were for ritualistic purposes or for contraception.

Early images of condom use in Europe were in form of cave paintings at Combarelles in France between 100 and 200 AD. In the 1500s, Fallopius proposed the use of linen sheathes to protect against sexually transmitted diseases. Animal gut, fish bladders, oiled paper, leather and tortoise shell have been used by the Japanese around this time, as well.
