Asian Wedding Customs   by Thomas

Asian Wedding Customs
Old World traditions add a unique element to any wedding day, giving the bride and groom a way to celebrate historic customs during their important celebration. Add real Asian wedding customs to your theme wedding, and incorporate interesting ideas that will make your big day even more memorable and special.
Hair and Head
o Two Chinese wedding traditions involve important hair and head embellishments. The bride’s hair dressing ritual is a rite of passage in Chinese wedding ceremonies, symbolizing her transition into adulthood. Before the wedding, the bride bathes in water containing pumelo juice. An important older woman receives the honor of serving as the “good luck woman,” who dresses the bride’s hair in a married woman’s style just before the wedding ceremony. The traditional Chinese custom is one-half of the ritual, which includes the groom’s capping ceremony. Before the wedding ceremony, the groom kneels at the altar so his father may place a cap of cypress leaves on his head.
Food
o Food plays an essential role in Korean wedding customs. Traditionally, the groom presents the bride’s family with a live, wild goose. In today’s times, many grooms who observe the tradition use a wooden goose rather than a living one. Geese choose a single mate in life, so the symbolism suggests long-lasting marriage and a promise from the groom to care for the bride throughout her life. The traditional Korean wedding ceremony takes place at the bride’s family’s home. After the couple exchanges vows, the bride and groom sip wine from a gourd, which the mother of the bride grows. During the wedding feast, noodle soup is a necessary dish at Korean ceremonies. The dish of long noodles conveys wishes for long, happy life.
Clothing
o Clothing gives many brides and grooms a chance to observe traditional Asian wedding customs and themes. In Chinese ceremonies, the bride often wears red silk, a colorful gown embellished with a Chinese dragon or phoenix. A red veil and shoes add to the traditional ensemble. The groom matches his bride by wearing an embroidered red silk jacket with the dragon or phoenix. In Japanese wedding customs, the bride dresses in a quilted robe called an uchikake. Usually, the robe includes cranes and pines, which symbolize happiness. The robe is traditionally made of white silk. The groom wears a black kimono over a white under-kimono in the traditional Japanese ceremony. Korean brides and grooms wear embellished headwear for their ceremonies.
Ceremony
o Asian wedding customs may also dictate the place and time of the ceremony itself. In Japanese tradition, weddings generally take placeMuslim Matrimony in a shrine or chapel, during the spring or fall. Buddhist ceremonies, which feature largely in Chinese weddings, occur at temples. Incense, ceremonial drinking and prayer are part of the traditional Buddhist wedding customs.
Family
o Family often plays a large role in Asian wedding customs. The parents of the bride and groom may feature heavily in some rituals and traditions. In traditional Indian ceremonies, which take place over several days, the bride’s hands and feet feature henna. The longevity ofTamil matrimony the color predicts how well the bride will get along with her mother-in-law—the longer the color lasts, the better the relationship. One traditional Vietnamese custom involves the groom’s visit to his bride’s family, where both parties light firecrackers.

Generations of young Britons made their careers in Malaya. Some scaled the heights of the administrative service and are well recorded in the formal histories. Others served in less high profile but equally challenging departments, carrying out the work of government in difficult and sometimes dangerous circumstances. Eastern Customs traces the fascinating story of the Customs Service in British Malaya and those who made up its ranks. The service had a brief but colourful history from its introduction in 1910. For the next three decades, it took on the opium monopoly and became responsible for its importation, processing and distribution. It was a lucrative business, providing more than 50 per cent of Government revenue. But as international opposition to drugs hardened the service controlled and eventually moved to eliminate the trade, becoming an anti-narcotics force after 1946.

Japanese

Japanese

$188

Japanese ranks as the sixth language of the world with more than 125 million speakers in the island state of Japan. Its genetic relation has been a topic of heated discussion, but Altaic and Austronesian languages appear to have contributed to the early formation of this language. It has a long written tradition, which goes back to texts from the eighth century AD. The modern writing system employs a mixture of Chinese characters and two sets of syllabary developed from the Chinese characters. This book consists of fourteen chapters covering the phonology, morphology, the writing system, grammatical constructions, and discourse and pragmatic phenomena of Japanese. It provides researchers with a useful typological reference and students of Japanese with a theory-neutral introduction to current linguistic research issues. IMPORTANT INFORMATION During the printing process of this book an unfortunate error occurred: page number 151 was mixed with the same page of another book. You will find the correct page here . The Book Of Customs

Fifteen years ago while researching Jewish imagery award-winning book designer Scott-Martin Kosofsky happened upon a 1645 edition of the Minhogimbukh — the "Customs Book" — a beautifully designed and illustrated guide to the Jewish year written in Yiddish the people’s vernacular. Captivated he investigated further and learned that from 1590 to 1890 this cross between a prayer book and a farmer’s almanac was immensely popular in households all across Europe. Published in dozens of editions and revised over the centuries in Venice Prague Amsterdam and throughout Germany before moving eastward in the nineteenth century to Poland and Russia these books detail the evolution of Jewish custom over three hundred years. But by the 1890s as Jewish practice became polarized between the secularist and traditionalist views the Minhogimbukh disappeared. There are no works quite like the historical customs books available today and none so thorough and concise intuitive in organization and beautiful. Inspired by the originals Kosofsky set out to make his own adapting the books for modern use adding historical perspective and contemporary application. The result is the reappearance of the Minhogimbukh after more than a hundred-year absence and the first complete showing of all the original woodcuts — a visual vocabulary of Jewish life — since the 1760s. Faithfully based on the earlier editions The Book of Customs is an updated guide to the rituals liturgies and texts of the entire Jewish year — from the days of the week and the Sabbath to all the months with their festivals as well as the major life-cycle events of wedding birth bar and bat mitzvah and death. With the revival of this lost cultural legacy The Book of Customs can once again become every family’s guide to Jewish tradition and practice.

A Short Guide to Customs Risk

A Short Guide to Customs Risk

$34.95

The historic growth in world trade, large containerships and information technology have triggered profound changes in international trade. A few years ago, Customs officers at the border were meticulously checking goods and documents before releasing a shipment to the trader. A business could be confident that a shipment that had cleared Customs complied with all applicable regulations. Today, to reduce congestion and give the trade quick access to their goods, Customs have introduced risk management principles and a large number of shipments clear Customs automatically. Controls have moved from the border to the trader’s premises and it is during site visits that Customs officers check the business compliance records. Moving from frontier checks to audit based controls has transferred a high level of responsibility and risk to the trader. It is now the duty of the trader to identify and report any error or irregularity and to keep an impeccable audit trail from initial quotation to receipt of payment. For the business, failing to provide satisfactory compliance records will result in delayed shipments and serious disruption in the supply chain. This will in turn impact on financial performance indicators such as Days in Inventory, Days Sales Outstanding and of course Cash Flow. The business will also have to endure in depth Customs audits during which Customs officers will inspect each step of the audit trail disrupting day-to-day business operation. Errors uncovered during these audits will yield heavy financial penalties and a Customs debt. Ultimately, Customs risk will impact on shareholders value. Customs and finance reporting should receive the same level of attention. However, if all companies check carefully their tax returns, only a few check their import or export declarations with the same scrutiny. Managing Customs risk is often seen as a cost centre but it is also a source of competitive advantage. A sound Customs management can reduce or remove Customs duties, generate savings, and generally improve cash flow using the many Customs procedures available to the compliant trader. Help is at hand, A Short Guide to Customs Risk will enable you to make informed decisions, and includes a foreword by the Head of the World Customs Organization: Kunio Mikuriya.

Customs Modernization Handbook

Customs Modernization Handbook

$34.99

Trade integration contributes substantially to economic development and poverty alleviation. In recent years much progress was made to liberalize the trade regime, but customs procedures are often still complex, costly and non-transparent. This situation leads to misallocation of resources. Customs Modernization Handbook provides an overview of the key elements of a successful customs modernization strategy and draws lessons from a number of successful customs reforms as well as from customs reform projects that have been undertaken by the World Bank. It describes a number of key import procedures, that have proved particularly troublesome for customs administrations and traders, and provides practical guidelines to enhance their efficiency. The Handbook also reviews the appropriate legal framework for customs operations as well as strategies to combat corruption.
