Japanese Street Fashion- A Blend of Contemporary and Traditional Trends   by Articles Manager

Fashion is a blend which comes to us again and again after having some changes in the style of people of ancient times. Japanese street fashion has come with flying colors. Youth has welcomed it because it is a blend of traditional and contemporary trends. They are not losing their traditional trend which is directly related with their culture rather they are accepting a new one. Being fashionable does not mean relating yourself with designers’ clothes and accessories, its all about feeling good from within as well as looking good. Fashion enhances your confidence level as well as it shows that you are up-dated.

Japanese street fashion has different style and trends. Youth like to be up-dated according to the era in their dressing patterns and make-up. Bright colours, eccentric patterns, hand-made garments, heavy jewellery, mixing and matching jeans and tank tops with traditional wear like kimonos, are in fashion now a days. Youth of Japan can be seen wearing Lolita, Kogal, Cosplay, Ganguro styles on streets showing the changes they are adopting as globalization is making all the trends mixed up.

All these styles have different look and different purposes. For instance, Lolita style has many subcultures Punk Lolita, Gothic Lolita etc. both give a different look. With Punk Lolita chains, beads, lace and wristbands are popular accessories along with pink and peach colour prints; whereas Gothic Lolita gives the look of Victorian age having dark colours, black make-up, heavy brooches, and ribbons. Another style is Ganguro in which the art of dressing is similar to North American. It consists of light or dark tanned bodies, bleached or dyed hair, summer dresses and platforms. All this gives a look of western style. As western countries are developed and known as fashionable countries around the world, people try to westernize themselves.

One more style is the Kogal style which is mostly used by the Japanese women to show their various tastes through the wealth they have. Some rich parents also spend on their daughters to adorn them with this extravagant style. They keep latest mobile and other accessories with them. They adorn themselves with big boots, skirts pinned very high, dramatic make-up and the latest in American fashion brands. Cosplay attire also requires a lot of money to be spent and can be seen in amusement parks, nightclubs and many high profile Cosplay parties. These dresses are influenced with Hollywood movies and characters like manga, anime, fantasy movies and video games. All these trends let you be with modern era and you can choose one for yourself also, according to your needs and pocket.

Reading Surimono: The Interplay of Text and Image in Japanese Prints

Reading Surimono: The Interplay of Text and Image in Japanese Prints

$107.48

This full-colour catalogue illustrates and describes over 300 "surimono" (privately published deluxe Japanese prints) belonging to the Graphics Collection of the Museum of Design Zurich, which were recently placed on long-term loan to the Museum Rietberg Zurich. Originally bequeathed to the Museum of Design by the Swiss collector Marino Lusy (1880-1954), the collection includes many rare and previously unpublished examples. Edited by John T. Carpenter, with contributions from a distinguished roster of Edo art and literary specialists, this groundbreaking scholarly publication investigates "surimono" as a hybrid genre combining literature and art. Introductory essays treat issues such as text-image interaction and iconography, poetry and intertextuality, as well as the operation of Kabuki fan clubs and poetry circles in late 18th and early 19th century Japan. Other essays document Lusy’s accomplishments as a talented lithographer inspired by East Asian art, and as an astute collector who acquired prints from Parisian auction houses and dealers in the early 20th century. Translations of "kyoka" (31-witty verse) that accompany images are given for over one-hundred highlights of the collection. The volume also includes a comprehensive index of poets with Japanese characters. This publication is not only indispensable to specialists in ukiyo-e, but has much to offer any reader interested in traditional Japanese art and literature.

Competition and Collaboration: Japanese Prints of the Utagawa School

Competition and Collaboration: Japanese Prints of the Utagawa School

$107.98

The prolific Utagawa school is one of the most famous lineages of print artists in the history of Japanese woodblock prints. It was founded by Utagawa Toyoharu during the second half of the eighteenth century and remained active in Edo, present-day Tokyo, throughout the nineteenth century. During this period, Utagawa-school artists dominated virtually every genre of ukiyo-e prints, or "pictures of the floating world," including pictures of beautiful women, prints of kabuki actors, warrior prints, erotica, and landscape pictures. Colorful, technically innovative, and sometimes defiant of government regulations, these prints documented for a popular audience the pleasures of urban life, leisure, and travel. The diverse works by Utagawa Kunisada, Utagawa Kuniyoshi, Utagawa Hiroshige, and others reflected the changing social, economic, and political conditions present during the closing century of the Edo period (1615-1868) and early years of the Meiji period (1868-1912). This 232-page groundbreaking catalogue features full-color images of more than 200 prints from the renowned Van Vleck Collection of Japanese Prints at the Chazen Museum of Art, University of Wisconsin-Madison. This collection – a number of which were once part of Frank Lloyd Wright’s personal collection of Japanese prints – is particularly noteworthy for its strong holdings of landscape prints including rare designs incorporating western perspective by the school’s founder Toyoharu. The book includes explicated entries for each work, artist biographies, and five scholarly essays about Japanese print culture and the Utagawa school.

Ukiyo-E: An Introduction to Japanese Woodblock Prints

Ukiyo-E: An Introduction to Japanese Woodblock Prints

$21.48

Japanese woodblock prints, or ukiyo-e, occupy a singular position in the lexicon of world art. They enthralled such Western artists as Whistler, Manet, Degas, and van Gogh, and gave rise to a wave of "japonisme" in the salons of Paris, London, and New York that left a lasting impression. As the successor to previous aristocratic traditions, the ukiyo-e print represents the last flowering of traditional pictorial art before Japan entered the modern era. These "pictures of the floating world" reflected the world of the townspeople of Edo (Tokyo), focusing on the popular entertainments of the day, landscapes of favored scenic spots, and portraits of well-known geisha, kabuki actors, and sumo stars. The present volume delves into the history of these unique artistic endeavors, tracing their development from the lavish works commissioned by aristocratic patrons in the sixteenth century to their peak in popularity among the rising merchant class of the flourishing future capital. As the story of the genre’s blossoming unfolds, Mr. Kobayashi’s illuminating commentary on all its varied aspects-styles, artists, engravers, printers, and the demands of an insatiable but fickle public-captures the essence of the art and provides a fascinating glimpse into the culture of old Japan. With the large color plates and numerous detailed close-ups accompanying the text, Ukiyo-e: An Introduction is essential reading for anyone interested in exploring the exotic world of the Japanese print.

Japanese Art in Detail

$19.48

Beginning by asking, "What is Japanese art?" this book supplies an answer so broad in its reach, so rich in detail, and so extensively illustrated as to give a reader not just a true picture, but also a fine understanding, of Japanese art. Arranged thematically, the book includes chapters on nature and pleasure, landscape and beauty, all framed by the themes of serenity and turmoil, the two poles of Japanese culture ancient and modern. Highlighting–close up and in color–outstanding examples of design and craft in prints, paintings and screens, metalwork, ceramics, wood, stone, and lacquer, Japanese Art in Detail presents each image alongside enlarged details–details that otherwise might be virtually invisible to the naked eye–thus affording intriguing comparisons between seemingly unrelated pieces. Throughout, John Reeve provides cultural context while pointing out exceptional features. Though drawn from one extraordinary source–the British Museum–the specific objects pictured here are representative of many others in public and private collections worldwide, and offer a clear idea, both broad and particular, of what constitutes Japanese art. Most of these images, as well as many of those mentioned, are accessible electronically through the British Museum’s online database, as are several tours linked to recent exhibits.
