Boston Museum of Fine Arts   by Pushpitha Wijesinghe

Home to more than 450,000 works of art, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts is one of the United States biggest museums. It also houses one of America’s most comprehensive collections. Founded in 1870, the museum is affiliated with the School of the Museum of Fine Arts which is a well known art academy and the Nagoya/Boston Museum of Fine Arts, in Nagoya, Japan which is a sister museum.

At the time when the Boston Museum of Fine Arts opened its doors to the public in 1876 it was home to only 5,600 exhibits. It was initially positioned in Copley Square. By the time when the museum shifted to its present location on Huntington Avenue in 1909 its collection and number of visitors per year grew significantly.

Today the Boston Museum of Fine Arts holds an immovable position among the world’s most comprehensive museums of art. More than one million visitors head to this exceptional museum in order to witness its art from ancient Egypt to modern day.

In year 2000 the museum underwent an extensive renovation programme. The new wing containing the arts of the Americas, expanded education facilities and the revamping of the European galleries came through following the year 2000 renovation programme.
Highlights of the museum include Egyptian artefacts, French impressionist and post-impressionist works, 18th and 19th century American art, Japanese work of art and the Gund Gallery.

The Egyptian artefacts feature various sculptures and jewellery while the French impressionist and post-impressionist works feature masterpieces of Paul Gauguin, Manet, Renoir and Van Gogh.
The museum is also home to numerous works created by the renowned John Singleton Copley and John Singer Sargent. Another impressive feature is the collection of 5,000 pieces of Japanese pottery and the Japanese Garden that can be viewed at the museum.
The museum is open throughout the week and the best way to access it is via the Green Line “E” train. There are also a wide range of modern accommodations located within close proximity to the museum. For instance, travellers can stay at the well appointed Millennium Bostonian Hotel Boston which is a contemporary and top class Boston Hotel.
