The Many Uses Of Japanese Woodworking
Woodworking is almost as old as humanity itself. As long as there have been people, there have been trees that could be cut down and reworked into something else for human use. Woodworking started simply with things like cups, bowls and spears but now woodwork is used to make things like bookcases, beds and even entire house. The Japanese culture dates back as long as any other, and have highly advanced woodwork to show for it.
Even the tools currently used in Japanese woodworking are some of the most advanced types of tools in the world. Some of these include marking knives, axes, scarpers, spoke shaves, chisels, hammers, planes, adzes, and spear pines. These tools are known for having extremely sharp edges that make cutting far easier; the hand saws and hammers come in a variety of shapes so that they are always perfectly sized for the job. There’s also one aspect of Japanese woodworking that makes it unique: they’ve developed a way to hide joints which gives Japanese furniture and other woodworks a special appearance.
Japanese woodworking has contributed to the way in which homes are built. For instance, most Japanese woodwork includes building things like shelves and other storage spaces directly into the wall. Because of this, the average Japanese household doesn’t have as much furniture as other cultures.
There are two types of Japanese wooden furniture classes that are very famous: the tansu and the nagamochi. The tansu class includes furniture such as chests-on-chests, bolted-door chests, and other chests designed for storage. On the other hand, furniture in the nagamochi class includes box-shaped pieces similar to trunks and other storage spaces. Japanese woodwork even includes things like shelving units, which are made with doors for ceremonial purposes like tea ceremonies or displaying ancient scrolls.
But what makes Japanese woodwork so famous is the deep respect that those who construct it are afforded in society. Those who are masters in Japanese woodwork are afforded a deep respect. Many woodworkers in this culture are perfectionists and really strive to do it the right way. This is why Japanese woodwork furniture is so prized.
