Japanese marriage proposals?

I will be proposing to my girlfriend, who is Japanese, this summer. She has told me some customs, but I would like to get as much information about Japanese marriage proposals as possible.

If anyone can share information, or a website with information, it would be much appreciated.

Have you met the FIL? Does he approve? Have the families met? Big issues. My MIL did not meet my mother and people until after we were married, the MIL did not really approve of me until after they saw how my family was living in my country of origin (when back for the marriage party, did the legal work in Japan, saved a lot even paying for airfares)

Remember that the family will matter much more in Japan than in other countries. This fact is often a source of friction. Japanese families do not understand non-Japanese family customs well. If you are an only child or eldest male child they would expect that you are expected to provide for your parents thus limiting your ability to provide for their daughter and if their daughter is eldest or only child same expectation of her as well. So that is a big issue that especially I think Western guys never contemplate because our connection to our families is not the same.

As for proposals, make sure the ring is the “right” one. Have a plan and be classy. Also make sure the prospective FIL and MIL approve.
