Modern Japanese Furniture Design

modern japanese furniture design
I need examples/pictures of a modernized traditional Japanese home?

As the time for buying/building a house is coming close, I decided I would like to design my house in a traditional Japanese style, though modernized. I love the sleek looks of the wooden ceilings, wooden furniture, paper doors/dividers, and tatami and wooden floors. I’d like to use a rather traditional layout of a home. However, i do live in Florida, and most if not all of houses these days are made out of cement blocks, so the outside would have to be more modern (though I really love the idea of an open engowa!) Can anyone provide me with examples or pictures of this and common floorplans? And maybe, if possible, the name of a program I could use to possibly give life to a design myself? Thanks!
I’d really like some floor layouts :)

The Museum of Modern Art and 5 Continents Editions recently launched this series of books dedicated to industrial and graphic design. Each volume offers an overview of a single country’s design achievements and illustrates its particular design history and aesthetic by showcasing renowned architects and designers through exemplary works drawn from The Museum of Modern Art’s unmatched collection. This season, they take on Japan. Japanese designers’ special ability to combine aesthetic tradition with contemporary visual culture and material innovation has created a distinctive and exceptionally successful design industry in Japan, which has produced such divergent icons of Modern design as Sori Yanagi’s Butterfly Stool, the Sony Walkman, the Honey-Pop Armchair by Tokujin Yoshioka and the Toyota Prius. This volume traces the development of Japanese design from the country’s craft revival in the early twentieth century to the extraordinary objects of high technology that have been a specialty of Japanese designers since the middle of the century. Antonelli’s lively introduction provides an overview of Japan’s design culture, while an essay and timeline by Penny Sparke illuminate the masterpieces of Modern Japanese design that are superbly reproduced in this volume’s plate section.

The Modern Japanese Garden Modern Japanese Garden

The Modern Japanese Garden Modern Japanese Garden

$32.76

Japanese garden design, know to the West primarily in its traditional form, has undergone striking developments over the last decade. The Modern Japanese Garden is the first book to survey these contemporary Japanese gardens, presenting the designs in a way that is relevant to readers and their homes, whether it is in the East or West. Most of the locations have never been seen before in the West. In addition to important public gardens (such as that of the Tokyu Hotel Cerulean Tower, Shibuya) there are examples of some of the best modern domestic gardens. Among the more experimental gardens featured are a water garden with glass rocks; a mountain garden with flashing kinetic rods; a house with a vegetable roof garden; a rock plaza that pumps out mist; and a rock garden built inside a large inclined tube. With chapters exploring such themes as the influence on contemporary design of traditional Japanese cultural ideas, the miniaturization of landscape, sculpture, and texture, and the use by some garden designers of far more planting than was previously found in Japanese garden design, this inspirational book is required reading for all garden enthusiasts, especially those living in urban areas, as well as garden and landscape designers, and architects.

Building the Japanese House Today

Building the Japanese House Today

Built like a piece of fine furniture, the traditional Japanese house is universally admired for its clean lines, intricate joinery, and unparalleled woodworking. Focusing primarily on a new guesthouse in California, this elegant volume shows how a classic Japanese house can be built to offer the warmth and comfort that modern homemakers require. Len Brackett, rigorously trained as a temple carpenter in Kyoto, has spent decades adapting the ancient Japanese design aesthetic to Western needs. Here he demonstrates step-by-step how both the traditional live-on-the-floor house, as well as models that accommodate furniture, can be constructed to provide such modern essentials as central heating, insulation, computerized lighting systems, and the latest electronics. This practical and inspiring guide-with gorgeous, clear photos and diagrams-is an indispensable resource for those who’d like to live in a Japanese home, for professionals who want to build them, and for any reader who delights in Japan’s age-old aesthetic traditions.

The Influence of Japanese Art on Design

The Influence of Japanese Art on Design

$34.09

During America’s Gilded Age (dates), the country was swept by a mania for all things Japanese. It spread from coast to coast, enticed everyone from robber barons to street vendors with its allure, and touched every aspect of life from patent medicines to wallpaper. Americans of the time found in Japanese art every design language: modernism or tradition, abstraction or realism, technical virtuosity or unfettered naturalism, craft or art, romance or functionalism. The art of Japan had a huge influence on American art and design. Title compares juxtapositions of American glass, silver and metal arts, ceramics, textiles, furniture, jewelry, advertising, and packaging with a spectrum of Japanese material ranging from expensive one-of-a-kind art crafts to mass-produced ephemera. Beginning in the Aesthetic movement, this book continues through the Arts & Crafts era and ends in Frank Lloyd Wright’s vision, showing the reader how that model became transformed from Japanese to American in design and concept. Hannah Sigur is an art historian, writer, and editor with eight years’ residence and study in East and Southeast Asia. She has a master’s degree from the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University, and is completing a PhD in the arts of Japan. Her writings include co-authoring A Master Guide to the Art of Floral Design (Timber Press, 2002), which is listed in "The Best Books of 2002" by The Christian Science Monitor and is now in its second edition; and "The Golden Ideal: Chinese Landscape Themes in Japanese Art," in Lotus Leaves, A Master Guide to the Art of Floral Design (2001). She lives in Berkeley.

Japanese ranks as the sixth language of the world with more than 125 million speakers in the island state of Japan. Its genetic relation has been a topic of heated discussion, but Altaic and Austronesian languages appear to have contributed to the early formation of this language. It has a long written tradition, which goes back to texts from the eighth century AD. The modern writing system employs a mixture of Chinese characters and two sets of syllabary developed from the Chinese characters. This book consists of fourteen chapters covering the phonology, morphology, the writing system, grammatical constructions, and discourse and pragmatic phenomena of Japanese. It provides researchers with a useful typological reference and students of Japanese with a theory-neutral introduction to current linguistic research issues. Space: Japanese Design Solutions for Compact Living

Space: Japanese Design Solutions for Compact Living

$26.23

Space is a photographic exploration of Japanese architecture and design in size-constricted areas, exploring imaginative, ingenious, and revolutionary solutions to space-compromised living. Masters in the art of managing small spaces, the Japanese in their design have given rise to a particular style of ingenuity. In their work, Japanese interior designers and architects constantly draw on cultural traditions, while using a modern, even radical approach. Whether in the use of lightweight partitions to create flexible spaces, deliberate profligacy to give a feeling of generosity, or strange perspectives, the results are not mere workaday solutions, but artistic and unusual ones that can turn a lack of space into a surfeit of style. Distinctly Asian in its feel and comprehensive in its coverage, featuring every room of each highlighted house, the book is divided into such themed sections as "Every Square Centimeter," "Interconnection," "Wasting Space," and "Shock Value." The crisp photography, inventive design solutions, unique packaging, and handy format make Space the perfect gift for anyone looking to maximize his or her space as well as architecture enthusiasts and those with an interest in Japanese style.

Modern Furniture Classics: Postwar to Postmodern

Modern Furniture Classics: Postwar to Postmodern

$33.27

With the close of the twentieth century, the design achievements of the postwar period can at last be seen in perspective. This book presents a visual history of furniture design since 1945 in some of the most spectacular color photographs of furniture ever published. The first half of the century was in many ways a testing ground for ideas that only became reality in succeeding generations, benefiting from the huge technological advances made during the Second World War and from the dynamic force of consumer demand. New materials and techniques created previously undreamed-of possibilities that were exploited to the full by innovative furniture designers. The exciting results began in 1945 with such achievements as the highly sculptural molded plywood chairs of Charles and Ray Eames, who were among the first to use organic shapes derived from the natural world. Revolutionary 1950s designs, including Harry Bertoia’s wire Diamond chairs and Eero Saarinen’s futuristic Pedestal Group, were followed in the late 1950s by the rise of consumerism — and the eccentricities of kitsch — which in turn gave way in the 1960s to the explosion of Pop culture. The following decades were equally rich, with the development of Counter Design by Ettore Sottsass, the factory lights and scaffolding supports of High-Tech, the Craft Revival, Art Furniture, and Ergonomic styling, with each trend continuing to show intriguing national and regional differences. This has become the standard work on the furniture of the entire period: every piece included is able to stand for all time as a classic work of design. Illustrated with over 140 color reproductions, all accompanied by detailed descriptions, it iscompleted by a comprehensive reference section that provides detailed designer biographies, a bibliography, a list of retail outlets and museums, and advice on collecting.

Modern

Modern

$3.98

The term "modern" can be used to describe places as diverse as Fallingwater, the Frank Lloyd Wright masterpiece of 1936 and John Pawson’s Calvin Klein store of the early nineties. Modernism encompasses many different styles, designed over a number of years– so what exactly is modern? Author Jonathan Glancey answers this question by, first, exploring every facet of the modern– from architecture to furniture to home design. In a Who’s Who of modern design style, he then lists all of its greatest practitioners chronologically. From the Art Nouveau style of Gaudi to the classicism of Michael Graves, all of the sub-styles that fall under the umbrella of "modern" are finally demystified. "Modern" ventures beyond the interiors of lavish homes to showcase club and restaurant decor, furniture, product design, and textiles. It also features the apartments and homes of the designers and architects themselves, offering a rare glimpse into the lives of these celebrated creators. Succinct introductions to each individual designer or architect’s mission set the work in the context of related fields, such as fashion or graphic design, for a view of the real-world impact of the modern. With full-color illustrations for each designer or architect, "Modern "is not only an authoritative account of 20th-century design, but a striking testament to the masters who have shaped contemporary taste. Includes a comprehensive directory of key designers and manufacturers.

The simple beauty of Japanese architecture and design has inspired many of the world’s top architects and designers, such as Bruno Taut, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Terence Conran, to name just a few. In "The Japanese House," renowned Japanese photographer Noboru Murata has captured this Eastern spirit with hundreds of vivid color photographs of 15 Japanese homes. As we step behind the lens with Murata, we’re witness to the unique Japanese aesthetic, to the simple proportions modeled after the square of the tatami mat; to refined, rustic decor; to earthy materials like wood, paper, straw, ceramics, and textiles. History of Modern Design

History of Modern Design

$108.19

Filling the gap for an extensively illustrated history of modern design, this introduction provides a balanced chronological survey of decorative arts, industrial design and graphic design from the eighteenth through the twentieth centuries. Focusing on the appreciation of design as a creative activity, as well as an enterprise conditioned by economic, technological and social history, Raizman includes the study of products and furnishing designed for mass consumption, and examines the social context for the democratization of culture. Feedback on the new edition: "Incorporating architecture, graphic design, product design, typography, studio craft, furniture design and fashion design, seamlessly contextualized through both the "fine arts" canon and popular culture of their respective era, Raizman’s "History of Modern Design" is an invaluable resource for not only understanding design history, but its relevance to cultural history. The host of new illustrations and up-to-the-minute writing on contemporary issues in design only improve upon Raizman’s winning approach." – Maria Elena Buszek, Assistant Professor of Art History School of Liberal Arts, Kansas City Art Institute
