Russo-japanese War

How did the Russian defeat in the Crimean War and the Russo-Japanese War affect Russian history?

?

The Crimean War showed the Tsar that the country was falling ever further behind their European rivals. And that the only way to catch up was a two pronged approach – free the serfs, so they can become urban workers, and build new factories and mines to make weapons, railways and textiles for uniforms.

Emancipation and rapid Industrialisation had two major side-effects:
1) The aristocracy and military thought that they were, by 1904, as advanced as the other powers and 2) The peasants were not happy with the emancipation terms – they had to pay redemption payments over 50 years for their freedom, and in the towns and cities the newly urbanised workers (really best thought of as peasants in factories) were unhappy with the wages, working conditions, working hours and accommodation.

The 1904 war with Japan showed the weakness of the Russian military, and angered the workers and peasants – as well as the soldiers and sailors (best thought of as peasants in uniform). The people revolted.
In 1905 Nicholas II was faced with a serious revolution. He allowed some democratic concessions – the State Duma and the October Manifesto, but soon back-tracked on them, neutering the Duma.

Finally, WWI amplified the deep seated problems within Russian society, and the political situation by 1917 was in turmoil – leading to two revolutions.

Stuart Goldman convincingly argues that a little-known, but intense Soviet-Japanese conflict along the Manchurian- Mongolian frontier at Nomonhan influenced the outbreak of World War II and shaped the course of the war. The author draws on Japanese, Soviet, and western sources to put the seemingly obscure conflict–actually a small undeclared war– into its proper global geo-strategic perspective….
