Samurai were most like free, unattached knights in Medieval Europe. Like the knights, some attached themselves to nobles and warlords, and some were members of orders. They were highly trained not just with swords (the katana), but also with quarterstaff and hand to hand combat forms such as ju jitsu. They were suppressed after the Meiji Restoration. They flourished from about 800 AD until 1869, and were strongest during periods when Japan’s central government was weakest or involved in civil warfare. They opposed western trade and influence.
