Writing and Literacy in Chinese, Korean and Japanese $195 Chinese, Japanese, South (and North) Koreans in East Asia have a long, intertwined and distinguished cultural history and have achieved, or are in the process of achieving, spectacular economic success. Together, these three peoples make up one quarter of the world population. They use a variety of unique and fascinating writing systems: logographic Chinese characters of ancient origin, as well as phonetic systems of syllabaries and alphabets. The book describes, often in comparison with English, how the Chinese, Korean and Japanese writing systems originated and developed; how each relates to its spoken language; how it is learned or taught; how it can be computerized; and how it relates to the past and present literacy, education, and culture of its users. Intimately familiar with the three East Asian cultures, Insup Taylor with the assistance of Martin Taylor, has written an accessible and highly readable book. Writing and Literacy in Chinese, Korean and Japanese is intended for academic readers (students in East Asian Studies, linguistics, education, psychology) as well as for the general public (parents, business, government). Readers of the book will learn about the interrelated cultural histories of China, Korea and Japan, but mainly about the various writing systems, some exotic, some familar, some simple, some complex, but all fascinating. |

Business Process Management of Japanese and Korean Companies $89.48 Today’s business environment is characterized by hypercompetition and the development of the Internet. Fierce competition between suppliers and the availability of abundant information have caused a shift in bargaining power from producers/suppliers to buyers and consumers. Consequently, Business Process Management (BPM) i.e. management tool to optimize and control operations flows by viewing the transactions within and outside corporations as processes, with the focus on speedily meeting customers’ needs has emerged as a popular management framework. However, recent research on BPM has put too much emphasis on information sharing and the visualization of business processes using IT innovations. This book argues that BPM must be linked with existing management tools. Based on survey results of Japanese and Korean companies’ BPM practices, the book demonstrates how to build BPM as a holistic management model by addressing the importance of BPM views, the effectiveness of its approach, and the latest research trends. |

Korean Language in Culture and Society $35.98 Intended as a companion to the popular Klear Textbooks in Korean Language series and designed and edited by a leading Korean linguist, this is the first volume of its kind to treat specifically the critical role of language in Korean culture and society. An introductory chapter provides the framework of the volume, defining language, culture, and society and their interrelatedness and presenting an overview of the Korean language vis-a-vis its culture and society from evolutionary and dynamic perspectives. Early on, contributors examine the invention and use of the Korean alphabet, South Korea’s "standard language" vs. North Korea’s "cultured language," and Korean in contact with Chinese and Japanese. Several topics representative of Korean socio-cultural vocabulary (sound symbolic words, proverbs, calendar-related terms, kinship terms, slang expressions) are discussed, followed by a consideration of Korean honorifics and other related issues. Two chapters on Korean media, one on advertisements and the other a comparative analysis of television ads in Korea, Japan, and the U.S., follow. Finally, contributors look at salient features of the language, narrative structure, and dialectal variation. All chapters are accompanied by a set of student questions and a useful bibliography. A beginning level of proficiency in Korean is sufficient to digest the Korean examples with facility, making this volume accessible to a wide range of students. |

Empire of Texts in Motion: Chinese, Korean, and Taiwanese Transculturations of Japanese Literature $72.98 By the turn of the twentieth century, Japan’s military and economic successes made it the dominant power in East Asia, drawing hundreds of thousands of Chinese, Korean, and Taiwanese students to the metropole and sending thousands of Japanese to other parts of East Asia. The constant movement of peoples, ideas, and texts in the Japanese empire created numerous literary contact nebulae, fluid spaces of diminished hierarchies where writers grapple with and transculturate one another’s creative output. Drawing extensively on vernacular sources in Japanese, Chinese, and Korean, this book analyzes the most active of these contact nebulae: semicolonial Chinese, occupied Manchurian, and colonial Korean and Taiwanese transculturations of Japanese literature. It explores how colonial and semicolonial writers discussed, adapted, translated, and recast thousands of Japanese creative works, both affirming and challenging Japan’s cultural authority. Such efforts not only blurred distinctions among resistance, acquiescence, and collaboration but also shattered cultural and national barriers central to the discourse of empire. In this context, twentieth-century East Asian literatures can no longer be understood in isolation from one another, linked only by their encounters with the West, but instead must be seen in constant interaction throughout the Japanese empire and beyond. |

Korean Managerial Dynamics $139.48 This contributor volume is the first effort to examine the management practices behind Korea’s successful transformation from an underdeveloped nation into a major player in world trade. Economists, journalists, and policy makers worldwide study the success story and point to the economic policies of government, a well-disciplined labor force, and a homogeneous culture. However, these factors should not overshadow the important roles played by corporate entrepreneurs and managers. Divided into five parts, this volume focuses on the business environment in which Korean firms operate, the corporate ownership structure, corporate strategies, managerial practices, and finally human resource management within Korean firms. Korean Managerial Dynamics raises a series of questions relating to the managerial practices of Korean firms and offers answers to these questions: What makes Korean managers tick? How does the government influence managerial practices? What kind of strategies and structure have Korean firms developed? To what extent do they rely on foreign technology? What are the similarities and differences with American or Japanese firms? Do traditional values influence managerial practices? Can Korean firms develop a corporate culture that can effectively function in an advanced industrial society? These are but a few of the questions discussed in this book. |

The Korean Management System $165 The Korean culture and the impact of the geopolitical environment of the Korean peninsula have produced a unique behavioral pattern in both managers and workers. It is necessary to understand this behavioral pattern in order to understand the Korean management system that has played such a major role in contributing to the phenomenal economic achievement of the Korean business community. Entrepreneurs, top executives, managers and workers are all integral parts of the management system, and their performance is given an in-depth analysis. After introducing the reader to the Chinese and Japanese cultures that share a common Oriental heritage with the Korean culture, the authors discuss the geopolitical influences of the major powers: China, Russia, Japan, and the United States. The Koreans first learned modern management principles from the Japanese, and following World War II, from the Americans. Later, the Korean government actively supported businesses' survival and prosperity. The various entrepreneurial management styles influence the development of Korea's modern managers as well. The impact of the group and individual behavior of Koreans, the evolution of the chaebol, the management of human resources, and the Office of Planning and Control are explored in depth. The very special ethical issues that surround Korean business dealings are also given particular attention. Top executives, managers, and entrepreneurs doing business in Korea or with Korean businessmen will be interested in this book's discussion of the Korean management system. This book will make excellent supplemental reading material in international business, human resource, and strategic management courses. |

Modern Korean Fiction: An Anthology $30.98 To represent the past century of Korean fiction, this definitive collection extends beyond familiar writers, challenges cultural norms, and crosses political borders. By including stories from neglected female, North Korean, and "wAlbuk" writers (those who migrated to the North after 1945 and whose works were widely banned in South Korea) and by bringing politically engaged works together with experimental ones, this anthology articulates the ruptures and resolutions that have marked the peninsula. From sketches of desperate peasants in straitened circumstances to fast-moving, visceral tales of contemporary South Korea, the works in this collection bear witness to the dramatic transformations and events in twentieth-century Korean history, including Japanese colonial rule, civil war, and economic modernization in the South. The writers explore these developments through a variety of literary and political lenses, revealing with precision and poignancy their impact on Korean society and the lives of ordinary Koreans. This anthology includes an introduction, which synthesizes the key developments in modern Korean literature, and a comprehensive bibliography of Korean fiction in translation. |

Korean Air Flight 858 $48.48 Korean Air Flight 858 was a Boeing 707-3B5C en route from Saddam International Airport to Kimpo International Airport in 29 November 1987. Two North Korean agents left a bomb in the passenger cabin before departing the plane in a stopover at Abu Dhabi International Airport. The aircraft exploded over the Andaman Sea. Subsequent investigation and testimony by one of the perpetrators implicated Kim Jong-il, the son of North Korean President Kim Il-sung, in the plot. Korean Air Flight 858 was en route from Abu Dhabi to Bangkok on 29 November 1987 when it exploded over the Andaman Sea, killing all 115 on board. Two North Korean agents had boarded the plane in Baghdad and departed during its stopover in Abu Dhabi having left a time bomb in an overhead compartment. The agents were arrested when they attempted to leave Bahrain using fake Japanese passports, and both immediately swallowed cyanide capsules. The male, later identified as 70-year-old Kim Sung Il, died almost instantly, but the female suspect, 26-year-old Kim Hyon Hui, survived. |

Korean War: An Encyclopedia $4.48 The Korean War began with a well-planned, nearly faultlessly executed invasion of South Korea by North Korean troops. Only the introduction of U.S. Army forces saved the South from destruction. This much is well-known. But what remains hidden about this "Forgotten War"? Stanley Sandler’s reassessment of the conflict draws on newly released documents from Russian and Chinese state archives. He deals with the history of the Korean peninsula before the war, including the Japanese, American, and Soviet occupations and the arbitrary division between North and South. The book deals extensively with the course of the fighting while relating military events to relevant diplomatic and social developments. Sandler gives special attention to technology and weaponry, the ground, air, and naval battles, and the United Nations contributions to the war. He also addresses psychological warfare and the prisoner of war camps. |
